Electrolytic tax exemption
approved by House
The
House of Representatives Friday unanimously approved a measure
co-sponsored by
Rep. Judy Warnick,
R-Moses Lake, to extend a tax exemption to electrolytic processing businesses.
House Bill 1062 would continue a current tax exemption that would
otherwise end due to a sunset clause in current law. The bill affects
two manufacturing plants, one in Cowlitz County and one in Grant County.
Eka Chemicals in Moses Lake employs about 30 people. Calvin Green from
Eka Chemicals testified before the Technology, Energy and Communications
Committee on Feb. 2.
"I was glad Calvin came to testify on the bill. Electricity costs that
have tripled and the economic downturn have made it difficult for Eka
Chemicals to stay in business," Warnick said. "They need this continued
tax exemption to keep jobs."
Warnick noted that this bill could keep Eka Chemicals in Washington.
"We need more business-friendly measures like this to keep employers in
Washington," Warnick said. "As we look at the current economic
situation, the best thing we can do as a state is to try to find ways we
can promote economic growth and jobs. I was proud to co-sponsor this
legislation."
