Warnick begins second term with hope,
goals
13th District lawmaker will work on
water issues, capital budget
Rep. Judy
Warnick, R-Moses Lake, began her second term in the state
House of Representatives Monday, Jan. 12, with a full committee schedule
and challenges ahead.
"Starting the year off with an almost $6 billion budget deficit is
discouraging," Warnick said. "But we have a huge opportunity to learn
from the past and re-think the size and scope of government. The only
way we can solve this economic crisis is to work in a bipartisan manner,
and I would take advantage of any opportunity to provide solutions."
Warnick will serve this year as ranking Republican on the
Capital Budget
Committee, which considers the state’s construction budget for
non-transportation projects such as higher education facilities, state
hospitals, prisons, state parks, and assistance for K-12 school
buildings.
"The capital budget gives the Legislature a chance to bring taxpayer
money back to the communities," Warnick said. "Even in hard times our
state continues to grow and have needs for new buildings. However,
because the operating budget pays the debt from the bonds sold for the
capital budget, we have to be cautious how much we're willing to borrow.
I'll be looking at projects that give us a real return on our investment
for the state and help stimulate the economy."
In addition to the Capital Budget Committee,
Warnick will serve on two
other committees:
Judiciary and
Rules. She is also a non-voting member of the
Agriculture and
Natural Resources Committee.
"Water conservation and rights will be a high priority for me," Warnick said. "In
addition to sponsoring my own bills, I
have serious concerns about several other proposals."
Warnick encourages constituents who want to be informed of issues
through the session to sign up for her
e-newsletter at her Web site,
