Warnick seeks legislative pages for 2009 session
Teenage students who are interested in government and how the state
Legislature operates are invited to spend a week in Olympia during the
2009 session. The House page program gives students an opportunity
to be involved in the Legislature and learn about the lawmaking process.
Rep. Judy Warnick,
R-Moses Lake, is now accepting applications from students between the
ages of 14 and 16 to page in Olympia. The legislative session begins
Monday, Jan. 12, and is expected to run through April 26.
"The page program is such a rewarding and exciting opportunity for young
adults to get involved in their state government," Warnick said. "We
have current representatives who were once pages. What you learn as a
page really
sticks with you."
During a week in Olympia, a page would:
-
attend page
school two hours a day
-
distribute
amendments and other paperwork between buildings and on the House
floor
-
possibly participate
in ceremonial duties such as presenting the flags
-
stay with a
host family in Olympia (if needed)
-
earn money
for his or her work
Interested students must have the permission of their school and parents
and must be no younger than 14 and no older than 16. An
application must be filled out and sent in to Rep. Warnick for the
student to be
sponsored. More information about the House page program can be
found on the Web site at:
