Mt. Vernon student serves as legislative page
PAGE RELEASE
Mitchell
Kahns served as a legislative page in the House of Representatives
the week of March 3. Kahns was sponsored by
Rep. Norma Smith,
R-Clinton.
Pages are exposed to the Legislature in action and
are responsible for delivering messages and documents to legislators in
their offices, in committee meetings and in the House chambers during
floor sessions. While in Olympia, students are also required to continue
their studies for two hours during the day.
"Visiting Olympia is a
great way for our children to understand how they can participate in our
government," said Smith. "Letting students like Mitchell learn at an
early age that they have a voice and can serve their communities in many
ways is so important. That's why I believe the page program is so
valuable."
Kahns, 14, enjoyed serving
as a page. The eighth-grader is the daughter of Cherri and Bruce Kahns of
Mt. Vernon.
To become a page,
applicants must have a legislative sponsor and be between the ages of 14
and 16, and obtain written permission from their parents and school. For
