Burlington teen pages for
Rep. Norma Smith in Olympia
PAGE RELEASE
Hayley Ekle
recently served as a legislative page in the House of Representatives
the week of Feb. 17.
She was sponsored by
Rep. Norma Smith,
R-Clinton.
Pages are exposed to the Legislature in action and
are responsible for delivering messages and documents to legislators in
their offices, in committee meetings and in the House chambers during
floor sessions. While in Olympia, students are also required to continue
their studies for two hours during the day.
"This is a wonderful
program for young adults and I was pleased Hayley could be a part of it,"
Smith said. "It is important our youth
understand the legislative process and this offers them an
excellent opportunity to do so. Like a number of former pages, she may
opt to apply what she
learned in a policy-making field in the future."
Ekle, 14, enjoyed serving as a page and
said she would be happy for the opportunity to do it again. She is the
daughter of Ken and Anita Ekle of Burlington and is a freshman at
Burlington-Edison High School.
To become a page,
applicants must have a legislative sponsor and be between the ages of 14
and 16, and obtain written permission from their parents and school. For
