Bailey, Smith support funds for local project
Public Works
Trust Fund includes almost $350,000 for Freeland project
A public works project in
Freeland will receive almost $350,000 under
legislation unanimously approved today in the House of Representatives.
House Bill 2437, which
authorizes the low- and no-interest loans, was supported by 10th District
Reps. Barbara Bailey
and
Norma Smith. The bill includes
funds for source improvements to the Freeland Water District in Island
County.
"This is an important
project for Freeland and I'm happy to support it," said Bailey, R-Oak
Harbor. "It is vital that we continue to make investments in our public
infrastructures. The future and health of our communities depend on it."
"Ensuring our local
communities have the funds to build infrastructure that not only meets
our needs, but also maintains and upgrades them is critical," Smith,
R-Clinton, said. "This funding also creates jobs and helps our local
economy. I'm grateful our community will see some of the benefits of the
Public Works Trust Fund."
The Washington State
Public Works Board is made up of 13 private citizens and local elected
officials from around the state. The board oversees the application
process to ensure that all elements, such as project cost and other
eligibility requirements, are included with the loan application. The
board then selects the projects based on need and effort, and sends
their recommendations to the Legislature for final approval. Once
approved, the city or local jurisdiction can draw on their loan to
complete the project.
Statewide, House Bill 2437 would
provide more than $278 million in loans for water, sewer and road
projects. The measure now goes to the Senate for further consideration.
