Schmick named to caucus
leadership position
Colfax Rep. Joe Schmick
has been named assistant caucus whip, becoming the newest member of the
House Republican leadership organization. Schmick, who was appointed to
his 9th District seat in November, was chosen for the position by House
Republican Leader Richard DeBolt.
"In the short time that
Representative Schmick has been a member of our caucus, he's shown a
real aptitude for the workings of the legislative process, and a
willingness to take on additional responsibilities," said DeBolt.
"Caucus Whip Lynn Schindler and I believe Joe brings strong
personal-communications skills to the job, and we're pleased to have him
on the leadership team."
The term "whip" is a
legislative title derived from the concept of "whipping" fellow party
members into shape by persuading them on key votes. The more
contemporary job description has less to do with "whipping up votes"
than helping maintain caucus unity on partisan issues and procedural
matters. Schmick's duties will include assisting Rep. Schindler in
conducting "head counts" among caucus members to keep tabs on the number
of yeas, nays and undecideds on a particular bill.
"I appreciate leadership's
confidence in me," said Schmick. "It's a great honor, and I look forward
to doing what I can to help advance the goals of the House Republican
Caucus."
