State House approves funding
for Tekoa sewer project
The state House of
Representatives Wednesday passed a public works project package
that includes funding for the city of Tekoa. Ninth District
Rep. Joe Schmick
supported the measure (HB 2437), which would authorize more than
$278 million in loans for 52 projects throughout the state.
The measure would provide
Tekoa a low-interest loan of $135,000 toward planned improvements to the
community's sewer system.
"I'm very pleased that the
funding was included in the bill," said Schmick, R-Colfax. "The loans
are a productive use of taxpayer dollars, and allow communities to move
forward with projects that might otherwise have to be delayed."
House Bill 2437 provides
money to local governments through the Public Works Trust Fund (PWTF).
Also known as the public works assistance account, the PWTF was created
by the Legislature in 1985 to provide low-interest or interest-free
financing for repair, replacement or improvement of roads and bridges,
water and sewage systems, and solid waste recycling facilities. All
local governments except port districts are eligible to receive loans
from the fund.
"The loans are
particularly helpful for small communities which must operate on tight
budgets," Schmick added. "And just as important, many of these projects
create needed job opportunities around the state."
The authorization bill
passed the House unanimously and now goes to the Senate for
consideration.
