Last night almost 2,000 residents from the Yakima Valley participated in a tele-town hall with Rep. Charles Ross. Ross spoke live with the community conversation participants, answering 20 questions posed by callers during the one-hour call.

"I'm pleased with the amount of involvement I had with my constituents," said Ross, R-Naches. "While this is a new technology and we are still working through the glitches, it's a great outreach tool for me to connect with the folks at home."

Topics of questions for Ross included gangs, assisted suicide, fuel taxes, all-day kindergarten, and transportation projects, among others.

"I really enjoyed listening to what the people in the district had on their minds," Ross said. "Hearing directly from my constituents helps me represent them better. I'm looking forward to speaking with more folks when I get home."

On Saturday, March 29, Ross and Sen. Curtis King, R-Yakima, will be hosting two town halls in the 14th District:

10:00 - 11:00 a.m.
S.E. Community Center
1211 S 7th
Yakima, WA 98961

1:30 - 3:30 p.m.
West Valley Jr. High School - Auditorium
7505 Zier Road
Yakima, WA 98908

During the call last night, Ross asked listeners three poll questions:

1. Of the following areas of government service, which one do you think deserves the most attention by your legislators?

public safety -- 35%
health care -- 29%
education -- 20%
other -- 9%
transportation -- 6%
*total respondents: 85

2. Budget experts predict that the state will face a $2.4 billion shortfall next year. Would you prefer that the Legislature address that shortfall by raising taxes or by cutting programs?

cutting programs -- 80%
raising taxes -- 20%
*total respondents: 115

3. Would you participate in another Community Conversation with Rep. Ross?

yes -- 98%
no -- 2%
*total respondents: 89

Ross said he may host another tele-town hall at some point in the future based off last night's success.
