State budget should save more, spend less, says
Ross
Naches Republican votes against supplemental budget
Today
Rep. Charles Ross,
R-Naches, voted 'no' on a supplemental budget today which he described
as 'irresponsible.'
The supplemental budget,
as adopted today, creates new programs with $116 million in additional
spending.
"It's like buying a
fifty-two-inch plasma television after you've heard you're about to be
laid off," Ross said. "It's irresponsible -- and if Washington citizens
can't get away with it, why should the state?"
After a long debate on the
House floor with requests to add or remove certain funding, Ross voted
against the supplemental budget.
"When the families in our
state find out their wages are going to be reduced, they must make
adjustments to how they spend their money until they can find larger
income," Ross said. "Families can't spend beyond their means without
consequences, and neither should the state."
The supplemental budget compliments
the previous year's budget, which allocates funding for two years.
"The whole purpose of the
supplemental budget is to have a chance to go back in and make small
financial adjustments to different programs and agencies," Ross said.
"The supplemental budget is also a great way for the state to help after
disasters, such as the deadly floods we saw in Southwest Washington."
