14th District legislators support public works funding for Yakima
Water system and rail lines benefit

Reps. Mary Skinner and Charles Ross voted today to approve a statewide $278 million public works project bill that includes more than $5 million in financing for two Yakima projects.  House Bill 2437 was unanimously approved in the House of Representatives.

Skinner, a member of the House Capital Budget Committee which originally approved the measure, said funding from the low-interest loans would be applied toward public safety projects and improved infrastructure to help citizens in Yakima.

"The railroad tracks run directly through the middle of Yakima. While our local area benefits from the ability to move large amounts of freight and agricultural products, trains operating through the city have a tendency to stop traffic and delay emergency response. We have long needed additional access to reconnect both sides of Yakima, and that's what part of this money will do," said Skinner, R-Yakima.

"I'm also very pleased that a portion of the Public Works Trust Fund will help to provide additional water to our residents, especially during the hot summer months when it is most needed," said Ross, R-Naches.

Below is the financing allocated for the projects:

14th Legislative District Projects - Public Works Trust Fund
City of Yakima
New water well for city of Yakima water system         $2.26 million
Railroad grade separations- Lincoln Ave/MLK Jr. Blvd   $3 million

The Public Works Trust Fund was created by the Legislature in 1985 to administer loan financing for critical public works projects around the state. The 14th District lawmakers noted that in its entire history, the program has never had a default.

The measure now goes to the Senate for further consideration.
