Ross elected to House leadership; wins seat on influential Appropriations Commitee

Rep. Charles Ross, R-Naches, was elected today by fellow House Republicans to serve as the caucus’ Assistant Floor Leader. Ross is the first freshman to serve on the Republican leadership team since 1997. The first-term representative takes the position formerly held by Rep. Dan Newhouse, R-Sunnyside, who was promoted to Floor Leader for the caucus.

“Charles Ross is clearly seen by his fellow House Republicans as a natural leader,” said House Republican Leader Richard DeBolt, R-Chehalis. “His opinion is highly respected by his peers here in Olympia and we are very glad to have him as part of our leadership team.”

Ross’ appointment comes the same day as the special session called by the governor to deal with property taxes.

“I am humbled and honored to being chosen by my colleagues to serve in this important position,” said Ross. “I will work hard to reward their trust.”

Ross will help Newhouse manage legislation and debate on the floor of the House and will represent Republicans in negotiations with the majority party floor leaders. He will also participate in House Republican leadership meetings.

Ross was also recently appointed to serve on the powerful House Appropriations Committee.  The Appropriations Committee establishes the state’s operating budget, sets pension policy and considers all bills that have a fiscal impact.

“Appropriations is considered to be the most important committee because it controls the state’s budget,” said Ross. “I look forward to using my seat on this committee to benefit the Yakima Valley as well as the state of Washington.”

In addition to Appropriations, Ross will continue to serve on the Judiciary, Local Government and Public Safety Committees.  He also serves as co-chairman of the Gang-Related Crime Work Group.
