Rodne resolution brings
awareness to deep-vein thrombosis
Condition claims thousands of lives a year in America
State Rep. Jay Rodne
has successfully pushed through a resolution in the Washington State
House of Representatives that raises public awareness of the threat and
causes of deep-vein thrombosis. House Joint Resolution 4678,
adopted by the House Rules Committee yesterday, recognizes March as
Deep-Vein Thrombosis Awareness Month.
Deep-vein thrombosis
occurs when a thrombus (blood clot) forms in one of the large veins in a
person, usually in the lower limbs, leading to blocked circulation. If
left untreated, the clots can move into a person’s lungs and block
circulation to this vital organ. This creates a life-threatening
condition known as a pulmonary embolism.
“The goal of this
resolution is to bring awareness to deep-vein thrombosis. According to a
survey conducted by the American Public Health Association, seventy-four
percent of Americans are unaware of the condition,” said Rodne,
R-North Bend. “Many people do not know about the condition or how to
recognize its symptoms – despite the fact it affects approximately two
million Americans every year. While the condition is usually
preventable, it claims thousands of lives in our country each year.”
Former U.S. Congresswoman
Jennifer Dunn died from complications associated with deep-vein
thrombosis in September.
The U.S. Senate has
designated March as Deep-Vein Thrombosis Awareness Month.
