Issaquah resident serves as
legislative page for Rep. Jay Rodne
Issaquah resident Anna
Rebecca Shelton recently served as a legislative page in the Washington
State House of Representatives. She was sponsored by Rep. Jay Rodne,
R-North Bend.
Ms. Shelton, 15, is the daughter of Duane and Marjorie Shelton. She is a
9th-grader at Seattle Christian School.
“I’m proud to have sponsored Anna as a legislative page. She was able to
experience the Legislature at a very busy and unique time of the
legislative session,” said Rodne. “My hope for all pages is that
they have an educational and fun experience in Olympia. It’s also
important they share these experiences with peers because we need more
young people engaged in the legislative process. Young people are our
next generation of leaders – including the political arena.”
As a page, Ms. Shelton’s responsibilities included delivering messages
and documents to legislators in their offices, committee meetings and
House chambers during floor sessions. This responsibility is considered
vital to the efficient operation of the Washington State Legislature.
In addition to assigned duties, Ms. Shelton continued her regular
schoolwork two hours a day and spent time in the legislative page school
learning about state government.
Young people from across the state have come to Olympia to serve as
pages for the Washington State House of Representatives since 1891.
Selection as a page is an honor, as each House member may only sponsor a
limited amount each legislative session.
Pages must be sponsored by a legislator and obtain permission from their
parents and school. Most pages live with volunteer host families while
in Olympia.
