Maple Valley students serve
as legislative pages for Rep. Jay Rodne
Two local Maple Valley
students, Thomas Hammett and Lindsey Watson, recently served as
legislative pages in the Washington State House of Representatives. They
were sponsored by Rep. Jay Rodne, R-North Bend.
Thomas, 16, is the son of Craig and Patti Hammett of Maple Valley.
Thomas is a 10th-grader at Tahoma High School.
Lindsey, 14, is the daughter of Brad and Dora Watson also of Maple
Valley. Lindsey is a 9th-grader at Tahoma Junior High School.
“Thomas and Lindsey are the first pages I’ve sponsored in the 2007
legislative session and I couldn’t have asked for two better students. I
am proud to have sponsored both,” said Rodne. “My goal for pages
is to make sure they have a fun and educational experience at the
Legislature, and that they share their stories with others. The
involvement of young adults in our legislative processes is important
and I’ll continue to support endeavors that promote this concept.”
Young people from across the state have come to Olympia to serve as
pages for the Washington State House of Representatives since 1891.
Selection as a page is an honor, as each House member may only sponsor
two pages each session.
As a page, students’ responsibilities include delivering messages and
documents to legislators in their offices, committee meetings and House
chambers during floor sessions. This responsibility is considered vital
to the efficient operation of the Legislature.
In addition to assigned duties, Thomas and Lindsey continued their
regular schoolwork two hours a day and spent time in the legislative
page school learning about state government.
Pages must be sponsored by a legislator and obtain permission from their
parents and school. Most pages live with volunteer host families while
in Olympia.
Students interested in becoming pages can contact Rodne directly
at (360) 786-7852.
