Kiwanis Club of Issaquah
honors Rodne for
protecting city's sex offender ordinance
Rep. Jay Rodne
was honored as a hometown hero by the Kiwanis Club of Issaquah recently
for his efforts in the Legislature to preserve the city’s sex offender
ordinance.
A measure that establishes residence restrictions for sex offenders and
takes away the ability of local governments to enact their own related
ordinances passed the Legislature in 2006 and was signed into law by the
governor. Fortunately, Senate Bill 6325 contained a successful Rodne
amendment that grandfathers in Issaquah’s local sex offender ordinance –
therefore protecting the ordinance from the newly-passed law.
“This is a victory for the forward-thinking local officials and
residents of Issaquah who held town hall forums and worked hard to pass
the local sex offender ordinance. I am proud I could play a role in the
Legislature to preserve these important efforts,” said Rodne,
R-Snoqualmie. “It’s becoming increasingly apparent that Issaquah is a
statewide leader on this issue.”
Rodne also reached across the political aisle to co-sponsor House Bill
3277 in the 2006 legislative session. The measure strengthens sex
offender laws by imposing 25-year minimum sentences for sexual offenses
– including rape, molestation and indecent liberties with forcible
compulsion – against children younger than 15, developmentally disabled
people and vulnerable adults.
