Statement from Rep. Dan
Roach on
the Democrat operating budget
Following passage Friday
evening of the House Democrat-proposed state operating budget,
Rep. Dan Roach,
R-Bonney Lake, who voted against the measure, released this statement:
"Although this budget
doesn't raise taxes, it relies on hundreds of millions of dollars in new
and increased fees, which will certainly be costly for taxpayers. It's a
budget of backward priorities. The cuts to the most vulnerable of our
state and education are deplorable. It should have funded the most
important needs of our state and removed all the fluff.
"This budget is a failure
to recognize that we have to get serious about changing the status quo.
The way it spends money will only create more problems in the future. It
shifts funds from the capital budget, which creates new long-term debt.
Nearly $5 billion of one-time money is used for on-going programs. It's
not positioning our state to get out of this problem. Instead, it
creates a future bow wave that ensures a deficit in the next two years
which could exceed $10 billion.
"The failure to set the
right priorities and make the difficult decisions to limit the size of
government means our state will be hurting very bad in 2011, and this
sets us up for huge tax increases in the not-too-distant future."
