PHOTO RELEASE:
39th District student serves as legislative page
Kristin Hutchinson
served as a page for the House of Representatives for the week of
February 4. The 15-year-old Snohomish native is homeschooled along with
her older sister. It was from her sister that Kristin learned about
paging opportunities. Kristin’s sister served as a page for 39th
District Senator Val Stevens last year.
Kristin is an active
member of her church, where she participates in the youth group and
helps with childcare. She attends The Rock Church in Snohomish.
After completing high
school, Kristin hopes to attend college to study veterinary science. Her
family cares for several different types on animals at their home.
Her favorite page
duty has been delivering items to the members on the House floor because
she said, “we don’t climb stairs.” Kristin was glad that she brought a
very comfortable and sturdy pair of shoes for the week, as she has spent
much of her time climbing the stairs in the buildings on the Capitol
campus.
Pages serve in the
House or Senate for one week, beginning with an orientation for them and
their parents on Sundays. Their day is divided between legislative tasks
such as distributing amendments on the House floor, and educational
opportunities such as page school. It is in Page School that the
students get to write their own bills and learn how Washington's
legislative process is different from that of the U.S. Congress.
