Statement from Rep.
Kirk Pearson:
Enough is enough, says
lawmaker; calls on governor to hold emergency summit with legislative
leaders, DOC Secretary Clarke
“I and my fellow House
Republicans have serious concerns for the well-being of state citizens
whose safety is being compromised by the Department of Corrections. We
introduced
House Bill 2084 specifically to deal with public safety concerns,
but have yet to receive a public hearing on the bill. The deadline for
bills to be considered in committee is tomorrow. In light of recent
evidence of on-going problems, House Republicans believe the issue must
be resolved before the conclusion of the 2007 session.
The Legislature and this administration must address recurring problems
resulting from felon early release and supervision. House Republicans
are calling for an immediate five-corner summit to address safety
concerns surrounding the Department of Corrections.
We are anxious to work out solutions to ensure public safety and restore
public trust in the state’s ability to properly manage the prison
system.”
