Issaquah's sex offender ordinance not
impacted by new protection zones bill
A measure that would establish residence restrictions for sex
offenders and take away the ability of local governments to enact their
own related ordinances passed the House today.
Senate Bill 6325 contained a successful amendment important to the City
of Issaquah. Under an amendment led by Rep. Jay Rodne, R-Snoqualmie, and
Rep.
Kirk Pearson, R-Monroe, Issaquah’s local sex offender ordinance
was grandfathered in and therefore will not be preempted by state law.
“This is a victory for the forward-thinking local officials and
residents of Issaquah who held town hall forums and worked hard to pass
a sex offender ordinance last summer,” said Rodne. “We are glad we could
play our role at the state level to preserve these fine efforts.”
“This gives Issaquah the recognition it deserves as a real statewide
leader on this issue,” said Rep. Glenn Anderson, R-Fall City. “The real
congratulations go to the people of Issaquah who organized to protect
their community.”
The legislative session is scheduled to end March 9.
