Pearson begins
third term in House of Representatives
As the 2005 legislative session began today in the newly renovated
Washington State Capitol building,
Rep.
Kirk Pearson stood in the House of Representatives to take his
oath of office, beginning his third term representing the 39th
Legislative District.
"It is a great honor to be back working on the issues that are important
to the people of my district," said Pearson, R-Monroe. "Many of those
priorities remain the same – protecting children, keeping our public
safe, creating new jobs that will bring in more revenue and improving
our economy.
"At the same time, we will have the challenge of balancing the state
budget while facing a deficit," added Pearson, a member of the House
Appropriations Committee. "Our economy is not out of the woods yet. We
need to focus on getting people back to work again, setting priorities
with our budget and making sure government lives within its means."
As ranking Republican on the House Criminal Justice and Corrections
Committee, Pearson said he will work to keep Washington’s sentencing
laws strong.
In addition, Pearson will be serving on the Select Committee on Hood
Canal. The 39th District lawmaker noted that this is a new committee to
address oxygen depletion problems that threaten fish and shellfish
living in Hood Canal.
"We’ll be examining the health of Hood Canal and see what can be done at
the state level to protect the livelihood of this waterway," said
Pearson.
This year’s regular legislative session is set at 105 days, with
adjournment marked for April 24.
