Orcutt pleased governor has finally called special
session on I-747
Restoration of limits should have happened months
ago, says Orcutt
State Rep. Ed Orcutt
said he's pleased the governor has finally agreed to a special session
and to restore the 1 percent levy limit under
Initiative 747.
Orcutt, ranking Republican
on the House Finance Committee, was the first to call for a special
session and did so within hours after the Washington State Supreme Court
ruled I-747 unconstitutional Nov. 8.
"We've been trying to
convince the governor to fix this problem since June 2006 when the King
County Superior Court first ruled against the initiative. We had
legislation in the 2007 session to reinstate the 1 percent limit, and
yet her party did not allow those bills to move. Unfortunately, she has
continued to drag her feet through this entire process," said Orcutt,
R-Kalama. "And now, since the Supreme Court has ruled, it has taken the
governor 11 days to recognize that a special session is necessary to
uphold the will of the people and provide protections for taxpayers."
Orcutt said it will be
critical for the Legislature to resist compromise proposals and stick with
the 1 percent levy limit approved by voters in 2001.
"There should be no
compromise with the will of the people. We need to ensure that the 1
percent cap voters approved stays intact," said Orcutt.
The special session is
scheduled for Nov. 29 in Olympia.
