Rainier High School student
pages for Rep. McCune at state Capitol
Thomas Peoples recently
served as a legislative page in the Washington State House of
Representatives. He was sponsored by Rep. Jim McCune, R-Graham.
Thomas, 14, is the son of
Michael Peoples and Gail Cozens of Rainier. A 9th-grader, he served as a
page January 14-18.
“I really enjoyed
sponsoring Thomas as a page. It was interesting to hear about his time
in Olympia and all that he was able to learn. We really put pages to
work here in the House and I know they are pretty worn out by week’s
end,” said McCune. “I think it’s very important young men and
women continue to be engaged in our legislative process and that they
share their experiences with others. Our next generation of leaders is
developing and they need to know that they can make a difference.”
Young people from across
the state have come to Olympia to serve as pages for the Washington
State House of Representatives for over a hundred years. Selection as a
page is an honor, as each House member may only sponsor two pages each
session.
As a page,
responsibilities include delivering messages and documents to
legislators in their offices, committee meetings and House chambers
during floor sessions. The responsibility is considered important to the
efficient operation of the Legislature.
In addition to assigned
duties, pages continue their regular school work two hours a day and
spend time in the legislative page school learning about state
government.
Pages must be sponsored by
a legislator and obtain permission from their parents and school. Most
pages live with volunteer host families while in Olympia.
Students interested in
becoming pages can contact McCune directly at (360) 786-7824.
