McCune will continue as
member of veterans’ affairs committee
State Rep. Jim McCune
has been tabbed to continue his service on the Legislature’s Joint
Committee on Veterans’ and Military Affairs. Originally named to the
16-member advisory panel in 2005, McCune recently received word of his
re-appointment from House Speaker Frank Chopp.
“I’m grateful for the speaker’s confidence in the perspective I bring to
the table,” said McCune, R-Graham. “For me, the opportunity to work on
military-related issues and to serve the interests of veterans is both a
privilege and an honor.”
Among its responsibilities and duties, the committee: reviews veterans’
issues and programs, matters affecting active military forces, the
National Guard and Reserves, examines current laws, and makes policy
recommendations to the Legislature. The committee also studies the
structure and administration of the Washington State Department of
Veterans Affairs and the military department.
“We have a substantial number of active-duty military personnel and
veterans in our district, all of whom deserve our respect and
appreciation,” McCune said. “Many of these men and women have made major
sacrifices to serve our country, and that’s why I’m proud to be an ally
and a voice for them and their families on this important committee.”
During the 2007 legislative session, McCune sponsored a measure (House
Bill 1308) to provide a real estate tax exemption to members of the
armed forces who must sell their homes because of relocation orders, and
introduced a proposal (House Bill 1720) that would give property tax
exemptions to veterans who are disabled in the line of duty. McCune also
was a co-sponsor of House Bill 1292, which creates a veterans cemetery
that will serve Eastern Washington, Northern Idaho and Northeastern
Oregon.
A small-business owner distributing Copper River salmon products, McCune
is serving his second term in the House, representing the 2nd
Legislative District.
