Bethel HS student serves as
legislative page to Rep. Jim McCune
Bethel High School
tenth-grader Cory Beins served recently as a legislative page in the
House of Representatives. He was sponsored by Rep. Jim McCune,
R-Graham.
Cory, who is 15, is the son of James Beins of Olympia and Faith Beins of
Graham.
McCune said pages have a significant role to play during legislative
sessions.
“This is a great experience for all of these young people,” McCune
said. “They have fun and they learn a lot about our state government and
the legislative process. These students also contribute a great deal to
making the system run more efficiently.”
Pages deliver messages and documents to legislators in their offices,
committee meetings and House chambers during floor sessions.
Pages also do schoolwork two hours a day and spend time in the
legislative page school learning about state government.
Young people from across the state have come to Olympia to serve as
pages for the Washington State House of Representatives since 1891.
Selection as a page is an honor, as each House member may only sponsor a
limited number each legislative session.
Pages must be sponsored by a legislator and obtain permission from their
parents and school. Most pages live with volunteer host families while
in Olympia.
