McCune's bill to finance
fire districts gets hearing
Rep. Jim McCune sponsored
legislation that would make state funding available to fire districts in
small communities of less than 10,000 residents. House Bill 3257 was
heard before the Capital Budget Committee today.
“This bill would bring much needed financial help to those small fire
districts that are most vulnerable to funding constraints,” said McCune,
R-Graham. “It’s important for the citizens of these smaller communities
to know they can count on medical and fire aid when they need it.
“Some of the fire districts are first responders to wildfires and the
funding would ensure that homes would be saved, in the event of summer
wildfires,” McCune said.
McCune is a member of the House Capital Budget committee.
House Bill 3257 would make public works assistance funds available to
fire protection districts in towns and cities with fewer than 10,000
residents, counties with fewer than 50,000 residents, or unincorporated
rural areas with less than 10,000 residents.
“I’ve heard from the fire officials in my district that they may not
survive without help from the state,” said McCune. “I’m committed to
pushing this bill through and securing this funding. I want the people
in these rural areas to know that the state can help their fire
protection districts and possibly prevent any closures because of lack
of funding.
