McCune reports results of
first veterans' committee meeting
Rep. Jim McCune recently
attended his first meeting of the Joint Veterans’ and Military Affairs
Committee with good news for veterans. Two state programs have been
implemented and are ready to provide help to the state’s more than
670,000 veterans.
“The Veterans Conservation Corps is up and running,” said McCune,
R-Graham. “I’m pleased to see legislation I passed last year come to
fruition for veterans.”
The Veterans Conservation Corps was put into law as a result of Senate
Bill 5539, passed earlier this year. Veterans participate in volunteer
opportunities on projects that help restore Washington’s rivers,
streams, lakes, marine waters and open lands. Those coping with wartime
experiences, such as post traumatic stress disorder, are eligible to be
included in the volunteer efforts.
Veterans interested in the
conservation corps can call 1-800-562-2308 or e-mail Mark Fischer at the
state Department of Veterans Affairs:
markf@dva.wa.gov.
McCune also reviewed
designs of the new Armed Forces license plates that go on sale in early
January. Proceeds from the sales of the license plates support programs
and services for homeless veterans and memorial funds.
“Our veterans deserve this
kind of financial help. I encourage everyone to purchase those license
plates.” McCune said.
McCune was appointed to
the Joint Veterans’ Committee in June of this year and the recent
meeting was the first since that appointment.
