House leadership appoints
McCune to
Juvenile Justice Committee post
Rep. Jim McCune, R-Graham,
has been appointed Assistant Ranking Republican on the House Juvenile
Justice & Family Law Committee, House Republican leadership announced
this week. McCune took the oath of office on Jan. 10 during opening
ceremonies for the 2005 Legislature.
“This is a superb
opportunity to be involved in the development of legislation that
affects our children,” said McCune, who represents the 2nd District. “I
am honored to serve as the assistant Republican leader on this important
committee and to work alongside Representative Joyce McDonald, the
ranking Republican member. We have thousands of high-risk children in
our state who need our help and support to become productive members of
our communities.”
The House Juvenile Justice
& Family Law Committee considers issues relating to at-risk youth, youth
violence prevention, juvenile courts, juvenile offenders, and Juvenile
Rehabilitation Administration. The committee also considers issues
relating to marriage dissolution and child support.
The appointment came in
the middle of a week that has brought excitement at every turn, said
McCune. “I took the oath in our beautifully refurbished Capitol Building
on Monday. On Tuesday we had the historic vote on the motion to delay
ratification of the results of the governor’s election. And Wednesday,
the appointment happened. It’s been a busy week so far.”
McCune, who voted for the
motion to delay ratification of the governor’s race, was disappointed
that it failed, but said that it doesn’t change the issues at hand or
how hard he and his Republican colleagues will work.
“The needs of our
constituents in our districts and across the state have not changed. We
will work hard with our Democrat colleagues this session to improve the
lives of families and individuals across the state.”
