Hinkle: 'Government must do
what's right'
13th District
lawmaker signs I-747 petition for a special session
State
Rep. Bill Hinkle, R-Cle Elum, added his name to a petition that calls
for a special legislative session this month to reinstate the taxpayer
protections created by Initiative 747.
"We
are elected by the people," says Hinkle. "The governor and the
Legislature must do what's right and honor the voters' decision."
Two
weeks ago, in a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court agreed with the 2006
ruling in King County Superior Court that I-747’s ballot language was
misleading and unconstitutionally deceptive. In 2001, I-747 passed with
58 percent voter support.
On Tuesday, Sen.
Don Benton, R-Vancouver, began circulating a petition among legislators
to hold a special session at the end of November when legislators will
be in Olympia for committee meetings.
"The
governor believes we can hold off addressing such a serious issue until
the 2008 session," adds Hinkle. "Unfortunately, the governor does not
realize or does not care that waiting for session is too late. Local
governments are already looking at 2008 tax and spending plans, and even
if we reinstate the 1 percent limit during session, it will not take
effect until 2009. If a special session is held in November, we can
ensure the 1 percent limit is in place for 2008."
