Hinkle supports recent
presidential primary election decision
Lawmaker
fought to save presidential primary during 2007 legislative session
Rep. Bill Hinkle
is applauding the decision made Monday by the state Presidential Primary
Date Selection Committee to move the presidential primary election to
February 19. The nine-member committee, made up of party leaders and
state elected officials of the Republican and Democrat parties, is
allowed to change the date under state law.
“This is a great decision and outcome for voters in Washington state.
There was a push in the 2007 legislative session to eliminate the
presidential primary election altogether. I fought against this approach
and continue to believe it is important that Washington voters have a
say in who their candidates for President of the United States will be,”
said Hinkle, R-Cle Elum. “I’m proud Republicans stood firm with voters
and will assign a portion of their state’s delegates based on the
outcome of the primary election. I think it’s unfortunate for voters
that Democrats will be putting all their decision-making for this
primary election in the hands of precinct caucuses.”
The committee unanimously adopted the motion made by Rep. Gary
Alexander, R-Thurston County. Prior to the decision, the scheduled date
of the presidential primary election was the fourth Tuesday in May.
