Walter Strom Middle School student serves as
legislative page for Rep. Bill Hinkle

13th District lawmaker’s daughter also serves as an honorary page

Collin Farnsworth Woods recently served as a legislative page in the Washington State House of Representatives. He was sponsored by Rep. Bill Hinkle, R-Cle Elum.

Collin, 15, is the son of Charles Woods and Crystal Farnsworth of Cle Elum. An 8th-grader at Walter Strom Middle School, Collin served as a page from March 19-23.

“I really enjoyed sponsoring Collin as a page and heard from numerous people here at the Legislature that he was a pleasure to work with. I know Collin learned a lot from his time here and I hope he had a little fun in the process,” said Hinkle. “I continue to support and believe the House Page Program is a valuable experience for all students who pursue the opportunity. Young people need to understand they are the next generation of leaders – including the legislative arena. It’s also important they know that decisions we make today in Olympia will impact them in the future.”

As a page, Collin’s responsibilities included delivering messages and documents to legislators in their offices, committee meetings and House chambers during floor sessions. This responsibility is considered important to the efficient operation of the Legislature.

In addition to assigned duties, Collin continued his regular schoolwork two hours a day and spent time in the legislative page school learning about state government.

Hinkle’s daughter, Rebekah, also served as an honorary page during the same time period. She helped legislative assistants in the John L. O’Brien Building. Rebekah also visited her father at the Washington State Legislature earlier in the year and got to meet the governor.

Young people from across the state have come to Olympia to serve as pages for the Washington State Legislature since 1891. Each state representative may only sponsor a limited number of pages each session. Pages must obtain permission from their parents and school. Most pages live with volunteer host families while in Olympia.
