Cle Elum-Roslyn High School
student serves as
legislative page for Rep. Bill Hinkle
Margaret Flynn recently
served as a legislative page in the Washington State House of
Representatives. She was sponsored by Rep. Bill Hinkle, R-Cle Elum.
Margaret, 16, is the daughter of Patrick and Anne Flynn of Ronald. An
11th-grader at Cle Elum–Roslyn High School, Margaret served as a page
from March 12-16.
“I really enjoyed sponsoring Margaret as a legislative page. From what I
gathered, she learned a lot from her time at the Legislature – while
still keeping up with her school work,” said Hinkle. “I wish all
students could page at the Legislature. Not only do lawmakers make
decisions here in Olympia that impact their futures, but young people
represent the next generation of leaders in this state.”
As a page, Margaret’s responsibilities included delivering messages and
documents to legislators in their offices, committee meetings and House
chambers during floor sessions. This responsibility is considered vital
to the efficient operation of the Legislature.
In addition to assigned duties, Margaret continued her schoolwork two
hours a day and spent time in the legislative page school learning about
state government.
Young people from across the state have come to Olympia to serve as
pages for the Washington State Legislature since 1891. Each state
representative may only sponsor a limited number of pages each session.
Pages must obtain permission from their parents and school. Most pages
live with volunteer host families while in Olympia.
