East Valley High student
pages for Rep. Hinkle
East Valley High School
sophomore Whitney Fernald served as a legislative page this week, Feb.
21-25, in the state House of Representatives. She was sponsored by
Rep.
Bill Hinkle, R-Cle Elum.
Whitney, 15, is the daughter of Kathleen and David Fernald of Yakima.
She is one of nearly 400 students between the ages of 14 and 16 who will
participate this year in the legislative page program. The page program
has been in place since 1891.
As a page, Whitney’s responsibilities included delivering messages and
documents to legislators in the House chambers, at committee meetings
and at their offices. She also continued her regular schoolwork two
hours a day and spent time in Legislative Page School learning about
state government.
In addition to sponsorship by a legislator, pages are required to be in
good academic standing and obtain permission from their parents and
school.
