Royal High School student
serves as page for Rep. Hinkle
Carly Jansen is serving as
a legislative page this week, Feb. 7 – 11, in the state House of
Representatives. She was sponsored by
Rep.
Bill Hinkle, R-Cle Elum.
Carly, 16, is the daughter of Kris and Vic Jansen of Beverly in Grant
County. She is a junior at Royal High School.
Since 1891, young people from across the state have come to Olympia to
serve as pages for the Washington State House of Representatives. Nearly
400 students between the ages of 14 and 16 will participate this year in
the legislative page program.
As a page, Carly’s responsibilities include delivering messages and
documents to legislators in their offices, committee meetings, and the
House chambers during floor sessions. Each job is vital to the efficient
operation of the Legislature.
In addition to her assigned duties, Carly is continuing her regular
schoolwork two hours a day. She is also spending time in the Legislative
Page School learning about state government.
In addition to sponsorship by a legislator, pages are required to be in
good academic standing and obtain permission from their parents and
school. Pages are paid a stipend for their service and most of them live
with volunteer host families while in the state capital.
