Morris Schott student serves
as page for Rep. Hinkle
Damon Christensen served
as a legislative page this week, Jan. 24 - 28, in the state House of
Representatives. He was sponsored by
Rep.
Bill Hinkle, R-Cle Elum.
Damon, 14, is the son of Daneen and Del Christensen of Mattawa. He is an
8th grader at Morris Schott Middle School.
Since 1891, young people from across the state have come to Olympia to
serve as pages for the Washington State House of Representatives.
Selection as a page is a great honor, as each House member may sponsor
only four pages this session. Nearly 400 students between the ages of 14
and 16 will participate in this year’s legislative page program.
As a page, Damon’s responsibilities included delivering messages and
documents to legislators in their offices, committee meetings, and the
House chambers during floor sessions.
In addition to his assigned duties, Damon continued his regular
schoolwork two hours a day. He also spent time in the Legislative Page
School learning about state government.
In addition to sponsorship by a legislator, pages are required to be in
good academic standing and obtain permission from their parents and
school. Pages are paid a stipend for their service and most of them live
with volunteer host families while in the state capital.
