Postage stamp commemorating American
coal miners one step closer

The House of Representatives passed a bill today to request the United States Postal Service (USPS) create a postage stamp commemorating American coal miners. Rep. Bill Hinkle, R-Cle Elum, sponsored the bill in the 2003 legislative session. The House passed the bill with unanimous approval.

“Coalminers helped us build the industrial age in America,” Hinkle said. “It’s important that we remember and honor them, and this is an excellent way to do it.”

House Joint Memorial 4007 seeks to recognize American coal miners and the coal mining industry’s contributions to the United States’ economy and energy supplies. It asks the USPS to issue the new stamp as a way to illustrate this colorful and historically rich segment of the country’s society for school children, educators, stamp collectors and the rest of the public. The measure formally issues the request to President Bush, the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, the U.S. Postmaster General, and the Postal Service’s Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee.

Hinkle, who also helped erect a coal miners memorial in Roslyn, believes it is important to commemorate these individuals who played such an important role in developing our country.

“We have stamps in honor of historical events, noted Americans and other things and people important to our history,” Hinkle said. “Coal miners played a vital role too, and a stamp in their honor would be a great way to bring their memory back into our lives and homes every day.”

The legislation now moves to the Senate for consideration.
