Herrera named to three House
committees
18th District lawmaker will address
transportation, technology and education funding issues
Eighteenth District
Rep. Jaime Herrera has been named to three committees in the
Washington State House of Representatives. The Ridgefield Republican
will sit on the Transportation Committee, the Technology, Energy and
Communications Committee, and the Appropriations Subcommittee on
Education.
“I’m pleased with my
committee assignments because they allow me to focus on issues important
to the people I represent – including transportation, education and our
economy,” said Herrera. “From Camas commuters, to Ridgefield high
school students, to local public utility districts, our communities face
challenges that I can help address.”
The House Transportation
Committee considers the transportation budget, revenue sources for
transportation funding, and issues relating to transportation policy and
agencies.
“I’ll be focusing on local
projects – including the Camas/Washougal widening and interchange on
State Route 14, the Ridgefield interchange on State Route 501, and
the Woodland Industrial Area,” said Herrera. “It’s important the
state focus on congestion relief and safety.”
The House Appropriations
Subcommittee on Education considers issues relating to funding of early
learning, K-12, and higher education programs and agencies, and makes
funding recommendations to the Appropriations Committee.
“Too many of our students
are struggling with the WASL or dropping out of school. This is a
reflection of our system, not just our students,” said Herrera.
“Our public education system must be funded in a way that best equips
students for success in a global economy.”
The House Technology,
Energy and Communications Committee (TEC) considers deployment,
regulation, and access to technology and electronic communications;
energy availability, production, and conservation; and related
infrastructure issues.
“I’m hearing from people
in Southwest Washington about telecommunication franchise fees, and
energy concerns,” said Herrera. “Many issues in the TEC committee
directly impact our local economy.”
Herrera comes to
her position with experience in public policy. She has worked for U.S.
Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers, the White House, and Washington
State Senate.
Herrera was
appointed on Nov. 29 to replace Richard Curtis, who resigned on Oct. 31.

The 2008 legislative
session began Jan. 14 and runs 60 days.
