Haler appointed to
children's oversight committee
Rep. Larry Haler,
R-Richland, has been appointed to serve on the Children's Legislative
Oversight Committee, tasked with monitoring the policies pertaining to
the placement, supervision and treatment of children in the state's
care.
"I'm honored and
privileged to serve the families and children of our state in this
capacity," Haler said. "We have a responsibility to ensure the
welfare and safety of every child in the state's care. It's a job
I'm looking forward to and one that I take very seriously."
The Children's Legislative
Oversight Committee was created in 1996 and oversees the actions and
activities of the Office of the Family and Children's Ombudsman (OFCO).
The committee can request investigations, receive reports, obtain
records, conduct hearings, request legislation, and make policy
recommendations to all branches of state government.
"The oversight committee
is about more than just dotting and crossing administrative i's and t's,"
Haler continued. "We are the Legislature's 'eyes and ears' within
the children and family services community. Our job is to make
sure that the policies and processes in place are being followed and to
recommend changes if needed."
The Children's Legislative
Oversight Committee consists of three members of the Washington State
House of Representatives and three members of the Washington State
Senate.
Haler is the Ranking
Minority Member on the House Early Learning and Children's Services
Committee and also serves on the House Appropriations Subcommittee on
Education.
