8th District lawmakers,
House of Representatives
laud Prosser gridders
Resolution
also recognizes school’s academic achievement
The House of Representatives today recognized Prosser’s
historically strong high school football program with passage of a
resolution honoring the 2005 team’s athletic achievements and community
service. Reps. Larry Haler and Shirley Hankins, who represent Prosser
and sponsored the resolution, spoke of the team’s accomplishments while
its captains, coaches and school district officials watched from the
House gallery.
“It’s great when children can grow up with a sense of tradition and
appreciation for those who went before them, the ability to be grateful
for the victories in life and to keep things in perspective when they
don’t come out on top, and the desire to serve their community. The
Prosser football program and these young men exemplify those qualities,”
said Haler, R-Richland. “They’re a great bunch of people and I’m glad we
could welcome and honor them.”
“The Prosser Mustangs are made up of young people who have achieved high
academic goals, not just because they are on a football team and have to
keep their grades up, but because they believe it is important to have a
good, solid education,” said Hankins, R-Richland. “These students
represent the heart of the state. Their community is the seat of
government for Benton County and the gateway to the 8th Legislative
District. We hope that some of these young people will have an
opportunity in the future to become involved in government and making
laws for our state.”
Prosser’s 13-2 season saw the Mustangs advance to the state championship
game for a sixth time, a claim few teams in Washington can make, with a
victory over the nationally-ranked, four-time state champions of
Bellevue High School along the way.
House Resolution 4697 recognized more than Prosser’s successes on the
gridiron, noting the 20 or more hours of community service each senior
football player has performed through the School to Life program and
pointing out the school’s significant improvement on the Washington
Assessment of Student Learning.
Present for the honor were team captains Jake Martin, Cameron Brophy,
Nick Edwards and Kellen Moore (captain Danny Lochrie was absent); head
coach Tom Moore and assistants Doug Fassler, Jay Dodd, Rich Harris and
Mark Little; athletic director Casey Gant; high school principal Kevin
Lusk; school board president Kay Brader; and superintendent Ray
Tolcacher.
Following the vote the group accepted lawmakers’ applause and later was
welcomed into the House Republican Caucus meeting room next to the House
chamber for personal introductions.
The resolution congratulates “team members, coaches, staff, faculty,
students, parents, and the community for the extraordinary job well done
and for their incredible achievements.” Visit http://apps.leg.wa.gov/billinfo/summary.aspx?bill=4697&year=2006
