Meridian Middle School
student serves as
legislative page for Rep. Doug Ericksen
Mark Crabtree recently
served as a legislative page in the Washington State House of
Representatives. He was sponsored by Rep. Doug Ericksen, R-Ferndale.
Mark, 14, is the son of Charlie and Karolyn Crabtree of Bellingham. An
8th-grader at Meridian Middle School, Mark served as a page from March
12-16.
“I really enjoyed sponsoring Mark as a page. I am hoping he learned a
lot about the Washington State Legislature and had some fun in the
process,” said Ericksen. “I believe it’s important that our young
people learn about government and legislative processes, and that they
share these experiences with their friends and peers. The decisions we
make in Olympia impact them greatly.”
Young people from across the state have come to Olympia to serve as
pages for the Washington State Legislature since 1891. Selection as a
page is a great honor, as each House member may only sponsor a limited
number of pages each session.
Pages must be sponsored by a legislator and obtain permission from their
parents and school. Most pages live with volunteer host families while
in Olympia.
As a page, Mark’s responsibilities included delivering messages and
documents to legislators in their offices, committee meetings and House
chambers during floor sessions. This responsibility is considered vital
to the efficient operation of the Legislature.
In addition to assigned duties, Mark continued his regular schoolwork
two hours a day and spent time in the legislative page school learning
about state government.
