Ericksen working to lower
speed limit at East Pole
Hannegan Road intersection
42nd District legislator also wants an activated signal ahead system
Rep. Doug Ericksen,
R-Ferndale, is working with the Washington State Department of
Transportation to lower the speed limit at the East Pole – Hannegan Road
intersection in Whatcom County. He is requesting it be lowered from 50
to 35 miles per hour.
“It’s clear that many local residents feel their personal safety could
be compromised with the current speed limit. With the increasing
development and subsequent capacity of the area, driving conditions are
a lot different than before in the intersection,” said Ericksen, who
sits on the House Transportation Committee. “All politics should be
local – and it’s important these concerned citizens’ voices be heard in
Olympia. I’m simply helping them with the process.”
Ericksen has sent a letter to Washington State Department of
Transportation Secretary Doug MacDonald requesting that the speed limit
be lowered from 50 to 35 miles per hour. The 42nd District legislator is
also supporting a request from local lawmakers and citizens to have an
activated signal ahead system installed that would warn trailer trucks
that the light will be changing.
“This is about reducing the possibility of injuries and saving lives –
it’s as simple as that,” said Ericksen, Deputy Republican Leader. “We
are looking forward to the DOT’s response on this matter.”
