Ericksen hopes OSPI
Website will answer questions,
ease WASL concerns
Rep. Doug Ericksen,
R-Ferndale, is hoping a new Website will help answer questions and ease
parent and student concerns on the Washington Assessment of Student
Learning (WASL). The website includes WASL information for grades 3-8
and 9-12, including sample tests, timelines, frequently asked questions,
and other resources.
Beginning with the class of 2008, students will have to pass all three
sections of the WASL to graduate high school. Legislators passed a bill
that allows students to retake the test up to four times and bank their
scores on sections.
“Our state decided it needed strong academic standards to ensure all
students can read, write and do math. This is an important commitment to
our future and the WASL is the tool to measure our success,” said House
Republican Floor Leader Ericksen. “The WASL is by no means perfect, and
we will continue to find ways to make it better. As we continue on this
path it’s important for students to know there are resources to assist
them with the test – and this website is a starting point.”
The Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI)
launched the website recently and will promote it through a public
service announcement campaign. The website can be found at:
http://wasl2006.com.
“If people don’t have
access to the Internet, they can call the OSPI or my office directly,”
said Ericksen. “Parents and students should not feel alone in this
endeavor and I stand prepared to help in any way possible.”
Questions can be directed to the OSPI at waslhelp@ospi.wednet.edu or
(360) 725-6000.
