Response to governor’s
pre-budget news conference
It’s hard for the citizens
of this state to understand what Governor Gregoire says, and actually
means, when it comes to our state budget. She led people to believe she
would not raise taxes, and then pressured the Legislature to pass
hundreds of millions of dollars in tax increases.
Her contention that our
current state budget is good for employers and economic vitality is
simply wrong. Our current budget, a 12 percent increase in spending from
our last budget, imposes the largest increase in state spending in more
than a decade.
Former Governor Mike Lowry
said raising taxes would be a last resort, and then raised taxes
immediately. Governor Gregoire has followed the lead of Lowry and the
tax-and-spend, big government wing of the Democrat Party.
The economy in Washington is currently riding a booming national trend.
However, the impacts of the 2005 session have not yet been felt and will
weigh down our state’s economy.
