House approves funding for
local sewer improvements
A list of public works
project loans approved by state lawmakers this week included funding for
sewer improvements in Blaine and Birch Bay. The projects are two of more
than 60 statewide that will receive funding from the state’s Public
Works Trust Fund.
The city of Blaine will
receive more than $5 million for wastewater pretreatment and
equalization storage along and underneath Marine Drive. The improvements
will prevent raw sewage overflows from reaching Drayton Harbor.
The Birch Bay Water and Sewer District will receive $132,600 for
preconstruction and $765,000 to extend sewer service into Birch Bay View
Community, addressing problems encountered with inadequate on-site
septic systems.
“These are important
projects for our communities to help protect our local environment,”
said Rep. Doug Ericksen, R-Ferndale. “I’m pleased we were able to make
this money available, but the real credit goes to local officials who
did the planning and made their case for funding these improvements.
With the Public Works Trust Fund money we can complete these projects
that will protect the harbor and ground water quality in our
communities.”
The Public Works Trust Fund was created by the Legislature in 1985 to
provide financial assistance to local government and private water
systems for critical public works projects and to encourage
self-reliance at the local level.
