Winlock youth serves in
legislative page program
PAGE RELEASE
Rep. Richard DeBolt,
R-Chehalis, recently sponsored Conner Allender in the legislative page
program for the House of Representatives. Allender is a freshman
at Winlock High School and is the son of Rick Allender, Chehalis, and
Rich and Carla McKnight, Winlock.
Page
responsibilities are varied and include delivering messages and
documents to legislators in their offices, in committee meetings and in
the House chambers during floor sessions. In addition to these duties,
students take part in page school where they learn how a bill becomes a
law. They are also required to continue their studies for two hours
during the day.
"This is a wonderful
program for young adults, and I was pleased Conner could be a part of it,"
DeBolt said. "It is vital our youth
become aware of the legislative process and this provides them an
excellent opportunity to do so."
Allender, whose mother was
previously employed by the House, said he made a lot
of friends while in Olympia. He shared a number of fun and educational experiences
with other students from around the state. Allender said he would welcome the chance
to be a page, again.
To become a page,
applicants must have a legislative sponsor and be between the ages of 14
and 16, and obtain written permission from their parents and school. For
