Graham teen serves as
legislative page
Mitch Brown, an 11th-grader at Graham-Kapowsin High School
served as a page in the Washington House of Representatives Jan 29 to
Feb. 3. Brown was sponsored by
Rep. Richard DeBolt, R-Chehalis.
As a page, Brown enjoyed an inside look at the Legislature during a
fast-paced week in the state capital. His duties included delivering
messages and documents to lawmakers in their offices, committee
meetings, and the House chamber during floor sessions.
Besides legislators, pages are the only other individuals allowed on the
floor of the House chamber, giving them a unique opportunity to interact
with their state representative, lawmakers from around the state, and
the House leadership.
The work day for pages begins at 7:45 a.m. and ends at 5:00 p.m., though
pages may be asked to work later if the House remains in session. Pages
attend a daily Legislative Page School, and also make time for their
regular homework.
Brown, 16, is the son of Gayle Brown of Graham. He enjoys golf and
choir, and plans to attend Pacific Lutheran University to study music
education.
