Olympia teen serves as
legislative page
Michael Watkins, an
eighth-grader at Charles Wright Academy served as a page in the
Washington House of Representatives Jan 23-27. Watkins was sponsored by
Rep. Richard DeBolt, R-Chehalis.
As a page, Watkins enjoyed an inside look at the Legislature during a
fast-paced week in the state capital. His duties included delivering
messages and documents to lawmakers in their offices, committee
meetings, and the House chamber during floor sessions.
Besides legislators, pages are the only other individuals allowed on the
floor of the House chamber, giving them a unique opportunity to interact
with their state representative, lawmakers from around the state, and
the House leadership.
The work day for pages begins at 7:45 a.m. and ends at 5:00 p.m., though
pages may be asked to work later if the House remains in session. Pages
attend a daily Legislative Page School, and also make time for their
regular homework.
Watkins, 14, is the son of Nancy and Phil Watkins of Olympia. He is
active in Boy Scout Troop 266. He also plays football, ultimate Frisbee,
and performs in school musicals.
