Lawmakers approve funding for local projects

A two-year state capital construction budget proposal passed by the House of Representatives today would earmark $24 million for important local infrastructure projects in the 20th Legislative District. Rep. Richard DeBolt, R-Chehalis, said he was pleased by the funding for local projects, particularly in rural areas of the district that have struggling economies.

“The budget will enhance education opportunities and also improvements in recreation and tourism projects that will provide long-term economic benefits to the district,” DeBolt said. “The only disappointment in this budget is the lack of funding for the Morton Train Depot. I’m working closely with budget writers and have made them aware of the importance of this project to east Lewis County. I’m still hopeful we can fit into the final budget agreement.”

Among the key projects for the 20th Legislative District that are funded in the capital budget are the following:

  • Centralia College – $3.2 million for the science building

  • Rainbow Falls State Park – $1 million for pedestrian foot bridge repairs and phase 2 of the Willapa Hills Trail development

  • White Pass Schools – $269,000 for roof repairs

  • Chehalis – $2.1 million for the Chehalis regional water reclamation facility

  • Veterans Museum – $75,000 for the Veterans Memorial Museum in Chehalis

  • Roxy Theatre – $75,000 for the Roxy Theatre in Morton

The 2005 legislative session is scheduled to adjourn on April 24.
