Local student spends week in
Olympia as legislative page
Caleb Palmquist, an 8th
grader at Horizon Middle School, served as a legislative page in the
Washington State House of Representatives in Olympia. He was sponsored
by Rep. Larry Crouse, R-Spokane Valley.
Palmquist, 14, is the son
of Joe and Laurie Palmquist. He served as a page March 13-18.
“I really enjoyed
sponsoring Caleb and it’s to my understanding he had a great week at the
Legislature,” said Rep. Larry Crouse, R-Spokane Valley. “I hope he is
able to share his experiences with his friends and classmates.”
As a page, Caleb observed the Legislature in action and was responsible
for delivering messages and documents to legislators in their offices,
committee meetings, and in the House chamber during floor sessions.
In addition to assigned
duties, Caleb attended Legislative Page School two hours a day, where he
sponsored his own mock legislation and budget.
Since 1891, young men and
women from across the state have come to Olympia to serve as pages for
the Washington State House of Representatives. Selection as a page is an
honor, as each House member may only sponsor four each session. In all,
nearly 300 students between the ages of 14 and 17 will participate this
year in the Legislative Page Program.
Pages are required to hold
a C+ or better grade point average and obtain permission from their
parents and school. Most pages live with volunteer host families while
in Olympia.
Students interested in becoming pages may contact Rep. Crouse directly
at (360) 786-7820.
