Condotta’s health care bill, stadium bill signed by governor

Rep. Cary Condotta, R-East Wenatchee, today applauded the signing of two bills spearheaded by 12th District lawmakers. House Bill 1383 allowing state employees to manage their medical expenses using a health savings account (HSA) and Senate Bill 6230 authorizing funding to build a multipurpose stadium in Wenatchee.

“I am excited to see some key bills I worked so hard on become law,” said Condotta. “Anything I can do to help the residents of the district, whether it’s making sure they have access to affordable health insurance or helping keep their business running, I am happy to do.”

After a session filled with long debates on the best way to lower the cost of health care, Condotta said, House Bill 1383 was the only solution passed this year that will actually lower the cost of health care in the state and increase accessibility of health plans. Health savings accounts, he says, offer a secure safety net for people who experience major medical problems and are a win for offering more health care choices in Washington’s stagnant health care marketplace.

“Each session, I go to Olympia with my ‘to do’ list from constituents and I try to get as much done as possible. I’ll admit that the short session had me wondering if bills like the Wenatchee stadium funding would be fully vetted in time for a vote,” said Condotta. “Not only did the stadium bill make it through, but a large number of vital bills were completed in what was a fairly productive session.”

Senate Bill 6230 allows local governments to hold onto a portion of sales tax revenue that is currently going to the state. These funds, in Wenatchee’s case, will be bonded to pay for a new stadium.

“This new venue will expand opportunities for groups that have, in the past, been too large for our current area facilities to reconsider holding their conventions in Wenatchee,” said Condotta. “We will also be able to host larger music venues. Both will benefit our local services, hotels, restaurants and recreation areas.”

Condotta also hailed the approval of Senate Bill 6823, a compromise measure that resolved a legal battle between beer and wine distributors and big-box retailers on the distribution of out-of-state beer and wine products.
